AI for HR: Boosting employee retention through tech

AI in HR Part 3 - Boosting employee retention through tech - Silver Cloud & Dayforce Blog Series

Welcome to our third and final installment of our 3-part AI in HR blog series, in partnership with Dayforce.

AI today is more than just a personal assistant in your phone and less than the terrifying overlord of a dystopian future.

The wide-reaching capabilities of AI make it a tool that all HR teams will be likely to use in the future, but we all know that early adopters tend to win out over competitors.

In HR, it can do everything from helping you find trends in employee behaviours to setting up recruitment meetings. It can even help you retain your top talent, saving you time, money and (maybe) heartache. With the help of innovative HRIS platform Dayforce, we’re looking at what AI can do to keep your employees happy and loyal.

Improved interview and onboarding

One of the main ways that HR leaders are taking advantage of AI is to automate manual tasks like scheduling interviews, screening candidate qualifications by chatbots, screening CVs, and onboarding new employees.

All of those (previously manual) tasks becoming automated frees up time for your HR team to work on more strategic and exciting initiatives.  In fact, according to Dayforce’s latest Executive Survey, 81% of respondents say their organizations are already using AI and machine learning to replace repetitive tasks. Which means organisations that don’t embrace it could be left behind.

When you start using AI in this way though, you should ask yourself ‘How do I do this ethically?’ and ‘How am I going to incorporate AI in the talent decision-making process?’ Ultimately, you can’t rely solely on AI tools to assess whether a person is going to work in your organisation or not, but it can help guide you and make talent acquisition more efficient.

While that may not seem like it’s relevant to retention, an employee’s journey with your company starts before you even send a contract out. So making this part of the journey more streamlined can set a new employee up to be happy in their new role.

Employee engagement and feedback

The right people are not just skilled; they are also passionate about their work and engaged in their roles. Engaged employees are more committed, productive, and likely to stay with the organisation, reducing turnover costs. They also contribute positively to the workplace atmosphere, which can have a ripple effect on the entire team's performance. So how can AI help with that?

AI can help by effectively identifying and answering employee concerns through feedback. In the past, getting feedback from employees used to be a herculean task. HR platforms can simplify this by enabling continuous feedback mechanisms. Employees can share their thoughts, managers can listen, and HR can act swiftly. With AI, analysing that feedback can be done faster and more accurately than before. This is where AI’s ability to review trends and offer insights is especially valuable.

Training and upskilling opportunities

Based on a Pulse of Talent survey from Dayforce, data shows that workers are highly interested in internal career opportunities. Nearly half (49%) of respondents said they want to contribute skills to new projects from within their current role. This is followed by 43% who are interested in moving into a new role in a different department or team. And 35% said they would like to change career paths within the company.  AI can help make this a reality for more of them, keeping your employees engaged and more likely to stick around.

You can use AI to identify training opportunities to upskill employees, enhancing the workforce’s adaptability and embracing internal mobility. The traditional career path has created internal boundaries that can hinder the movement of people between departments and teams. In a data sample from McKinsey more than 80% of role moves involved respondents moving to a new employer, but getting a new job shouldn’t require an external move. AI reveals new paths that employees could take, making the most of the team members you already have.

AI can help you across the full life cycle of employee experience. From recruitment to upskilling to, one day, leaving, it helps automate processes, identify opportunities and give your people team more people time. Rather than be bogged down by admin, you and your team can save time and focus on the people and strategic projects that really need a human touch.
